2010 Summer Reading Book Reviews

SRP Week 6

Book:  Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

My opinion is that this book is definitely not as good as the movie. The story is basically about Peter Pan, Wendy, and the Lost Boys. I did not think very highly of the book after reading it because Peter has short term memory loss! Yes, it's true. I was very disappointed with this book.

Book:  The Pearls of Lutra by Brain Jacques

Brian Jacques is a brilliant writer. The Pearls of Lutra is a wonderful book. In The Pearls of Lutra, the Abbot of Redwall Abbey is taken hostage along with a young bankvole named Viola. The Abbot and bankvole are held for ransom. The price for them are the Tears of All the Oceans, six rose colored pearls taken from the otter holt of Lutra. A young hedgehog named Tansy is on a mission to find the pearls to free the Abbot and Viola. This is a wonderful book of self-sacrifice, friendship, and not giving up.

Book:  The Luxe by Anna Godbersen

This was a rather dark story. It had a lot of romance, scandal and betrayal. Interesting beginning (the death of Elizabeth) then the story of Elizabeth and I won't say how it ends! (:  This book reminded me a lot of the Gemma Doyle series, except The Luxe is set in New York.

What does your friend need to know in order to read this book?

If you like "Victorian" stories (like the Gemma Doyle series) you should definitely read The Luxe. Warning: this is not a fantasy book!

Book:  The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

The Five People You Meet in Heaven is a very sweet and sad book. It is about an old man who dies and goes to heaven, a place that is nothing like he would expect it to be. The book is all about how people's lives are all intertwined, even if we don't know it. It is the book you want to read if you want a good cry. Although it seems sad, it is really good and uplifting. I loved it!

Book:  Heroes of the Valley by Jonathon Stroud

This book is about a boy who lives in a valley that was settled a very long time ago by "the heroes." There are twelve "houses" in the valley, and everyone belongs to a house. There is a line of cairns that nobody dares to go past because supposedly there are terrible creatures called trows that live up in the marshes. The main character is a boy from Svein's house who is sick of living by the rules of the heroes and wants to be free. He meets a girl from Arne's house and together they go on adventures. Eventually, they come to the decision that they can either stay in the valley, or go past the line of the cairns and risk their lives to possibly find a new land.

Book:  Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Better than the first, by far! Holds your breath to the very ending. I love the characters because they seem so life like.

Have everything you need right next to you ex. food, water, pillow blanket etc. Because you won’t want to leave the pages unturned for to long. It pushes the boundaries of reality/fictional; because it’s to the point where you feel everything the they are feeling it’s that powerful.

Book:  Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

It was the best book I have read all summer so far. Originally I didn’t think I would like it because it was like an action adventure book but immediately on the 3rd page i was caught hook, line, and sinker. It captivates you from the very beginning almost as if you yourself depend on these characters. A great book for everyone

Book:  Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

Be prepared to choose sides and beware that lack of sleep is involved when reading this. Caution: don’t day dream about sparkly vampires while driving it can be a hazard to your health.

It is really really good I think one of the best vampire novels I have read in a very long time, it completely blows all stereotypical knowledge about vampires out the window.
