Local Obituary Services / Local History Searches

Reference staff of the Santa Barbara Public Library System will search for and provide copies, as available, of obituaries for persons who either resided or died in Santa Barbara County. There is a $15.00 fee for this service.  Obituary search requests will only be accepted by regular mail and must include payment by check or money order.

• Name of the deceased, including nicknames or other names which might help identify the person;
• Exact date of death or approximate date of death;
• Your name and mailing address.
• Check or money order in the amount of $15.00 made out to Santa Barbara Public Library. Do not send cash.

Reference staff will search obituaries in the local newspaper on the exact or approximate date of death and for ten days beyond the date given. Staff cannot conduct searches when no date is known, so please provide as much information as possible. Requests can take 4-6 weeks to process.

Local History Searches

$15.00 fee / 30 minutes of research

Local History search requests will only be accepted by regular mail and must include payment by check or money order made out to Santa Barbara Public Library. Do not send cash.

Please include any names, places, dates or other information that might help in the search. Searching past the first half hour will only be done if the Librarian believes there is a reasonable chance of further information being found. Before extra charges are incurred the patron will be contacted. Please include your email address in your letter to facilitate any questions that might arise. Requests can take 4-6 weeks to process.
